Each client under my care receives a thorough evaluation aimed at addressing the root cause of pain and is guided through a goal-driven plan tailored to their schedule, experience level, and expectations. We'll discuss why this plan was selected, and work together through each stage of rehab.
Optimal health is multi-factorial! Injuries almost never occur in isolation, and our sessions together will explore how things like sleep, nutrition, social-relational stress, and your training schedule all affect your outcomes.
In high school, my 4x800m team was crowned State Champions and was ranked 7th nationally. I continued my competitive running career at Indiana University where I was a member of the Men's XC and Track teams. I've continued running locally in NYC, and am currently the Assistant XC & Track Coach to my former high school team in Noblesville, Indiana.

CHAS SALMEN

ANTHROPOLOGIST
FORMER CAMPER & CLIENT
ANTHROPOLOGIST
FORMER CAMPER & CLIENT
Chas Salmen is a medical anthropologist, Rhodes Scholar, and Family Physician on faculty at the University of Minnesota. Chas Salmen grew up in the snowy mountains and rushing rivers of western Colorado. Chas was first inspired to “take a risk” in 1999, as a freshman at Glenwood Springs High School where he met Coach Sanderson in his first distance coach. Following a state championship as part of the GSHS 4x800 relay team, Chas went onto compete for 4 years at Duke University and served as Captain of Men’s Varsity Cross Country and Track Teams. Following graduation, Chas spent 8 months working as a community mobilizer for an HIV/AIDS organization in Western Kenya. There his life changed dramatically one day while backpacking through a bus stop near the shores of Lake Victoria, Homa Bay, Kenya. He met a couple Kenyan farmers who invited him to visit their organic farm “on an island out in the middle of Lake Victoria”. Taking advice from his original coach, Chas took a risk and got on a boat to Mfangano Island… and he’s been hooked on this remote island ever since.
In 2007, Chas began a Master’s Degree in Medical Anthropology from the Oxford University Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology through a Rhodes Scholarship (District 13, Balliol College). Chas spent the next 2 years conducting extensive ethnographic fieldwork on Mfangano Island. His award winning anthropological research focused on the unexplored relationship between the introduction of Nile Perch to the Lake Victoria Basin in the 1960’s and HIV epidemiology among Suba fishing communities on Lake Victoria. During this time Chas began working a group of local farmers and health workers to found a community-based health organization called the Organic Health Response (organichealthresponse.org). Chas completed medical school at University of California-San Francisco, and his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Today, Chas serves as the Director of the OHR-UMN Mfangano Island Community Health Field Station, a collaboration between University of Minnesota and OHR to promote research, training, and innovative global health strategies.
Chas has two young kids (Moses and Sunrae), and stays in shape chasing them down the street on their bikes, and planting lots of native trees on his families small farm on Mfangano Island.
Favorite Quotes:
