Daniel Roberts shatters personal best record from 2004 at the 2005 Mid-West Regional Footlocker championships by 33 seconds with a 15:09 (5k) on a hilly and muddy/snowy course to finish 6th overall out of a field of nearly 1500 runners with 560 runners in the seeded race. Coach Sanderson said when the first mile is nearly all up hill and they go out in 4:40 for the mile, you no you are watching something special. The Mid West Footlocker Championships is one of the ultimate stages for running in America and it selected 10 runners from the midwest with 12 states in attendance to be sent to sunny San Diego on the 8th of December - 11th. All expense paid from Footlocker and Nike. Daniel was also selected to the All Mid-West team and helped the State of Colorado finish with the second overall trophy. Daniel Roberts was in the media room much of the morning talking about how elevation made me a stronger runner and how the town of Crested Butte supported him tremendously. This is really a big deal Coach Sanderson said, we are trying to do something that has never taken place on American Soil. We are taking kids at the high school level with great abilities or with being emotional plagued or reaching stardom to early in life, and trying to give them ownership in their running. A lot of people might say that it will never work bringing a kid from sea level to over 9,000 ft for his senior year. The myths were put to sleep on November 24th and now we can focus on a National title for December 10th in San Diego, California. Coach Sanderson wants to note that none of this would of taken place if we did not have the incredible teaching staff at the academy to lure these kinds of kids to Crested Butte, Gary Wolf at the Crested Butte Club and Spa, Crested Butte Community School with the team work of their sports program, Dr. Roger Sherman devoting his time to our runners, Western State, AQX Incorporated, Dr. Eric Haynie, Keith and Kirk Apt, and the entire town for showing their support On Further note from the Academy, Elizabeth Bruce who decided to not attend regionals because of a turned ankle in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago signed a National letter of atent to Columbia University in New York City for the fall of 06, and Daniel Roberts signed a National Letter of Atent to Cedarville University in Ohio for fall 06.
